Abstract

The questions of duration and safety for treatment of osteoporosis with bisphosphonates are among the most important in the medical practice. Today, the issues of efficiency are raised, as well as what categories of patients bisphosphonate therapy is indicated for, how long the drugs of this group could be used, and is it possible to suspend the bisphosphonates temporally without increasing the risk of fractures. The article presents the new data on the possibility and the need for treatment interruptions of anti-osteoporotic drugs, so-called «drug holidays», without the loss of efficacy and the increased risk of fractures. The concept of «drug holidays» provides for the temporary suspension of active treatment with bisphosphonates in the safe period. It is believed that in this period
the anti-resorptive effect of the drugs is preserved, so it is safe. The selection of candidates for the interruption in the treatment and the monitoring features during «holidays» should be adapted to individual patients.
