Abstract

Radiation-induced cardiac valve disease is a delayed consequence of the radiation therapy for mediastinal tumours. It can run a long, asymptomatic course and be diagnosed decades after the exposure. Aim: The study aims at evaluating the contemporary status of the problem of radiation-induced cardiac valve disease based on the review of the literature and clinical observation. Materials and methods: The literature was reviewed in the PubMed engine, typing the key words that included radiation-induced cardiac valve disease, side effects of radiation/beam therapy, cardiovascular risk. The paper describes the clinical case of a 50-year-old female patient who received radiation treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma at the age of 18. Results and discussion: The literature data was analysed with regard to the frequency, mechanisms, nosological relationship, features of the clinical picture, diagnosis and treatment for radiation-induced cardiac valve disease. A clinical case of low-symptomatic, first-diagnosed combined aortic defect with prevalent stenosis (degree 4) with normal-sized cardiac chambers was described. Conclusion: Radiation-induced acquired heart defects are asymptomatic and must be of medical concern.
