Influence of pleiotropic effects of statins on clinical and roentgenological indicators of the condition of periodontal tissues in patients with coronary artery disease (literature review)

Abstract

In recent years, scientific data have appeared in modern literary sources that open up new perspectives for the use of statins, which are traditionally used to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood plasma. Clinical and experimental studies increasingly demonstrate that the systemic use of statins in patients with coronary artery disease has a beneficial effect on the condition of periodontal tissues, in particular, reducing the area of the inflammatory process in the periodontium, stopping bleeding gums, reducing the depth of periodontal pockets, tooth mobility, etc. This phenomenon is justified by a number of pleiotropic properties of statins, which are active outside the cardiovascular system and can exhibit anti-inflammatory, immunostimulating, antioxidant, and osteotropic effects. The purpose of the article is the analysis of domestic and foreign publications devoted to the study of the mechanisms of influence of the pleiotropic effects of statins on periodontal tissues during their systemic and local application.
