Abstract

Anemia and iron deficiency are common comorbid conditions in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF), particularly
among elderly and senile individuals. They are associated with reduced quality of life, decreased physical capacity, and increased
rates of hospitalization and mortality. The aim of this study is to summarize current data on the pathogenesis, clinical significance,
diagnosis, and treatment of anemia in patients with CHF. It has been demonstrated that iron deficiency may adversely affect
the course of CHF even in the absence of anemia. The necessity of screening and an individualized therapeutic approach is
substantiated.
