Abstract

The article systematizes and presents numerous methods for diagnosing obesity, including body mass index (BMI),
waist circumference, hip circumference, body adiposity index, waist-to-hip ratio, body roundness index, neck circumference,
skinfold thickness, and body shape index or waist-based obesity index. The prognostic value of each of these methods in obesity
has been determined. Body mass index (BMI) remains the most commonly used indicator for screening, diagnosis, and assessment
of metabolic and cardiovascular risks. Combining BMI with waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), waist-to-hip ratio
(WHR), and body fat percentage increases its diagnostic and prognostic value. The body roundness index may serve as a better
alternative to the classical method of assessing the degree of obesity — BMI.
