Abstract
For many years, metformin has been the drug of the first choice in hypoglycemic therapy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. With its proven high effectiveness in the prevention of macro- and microvascular diabetes complications and its safety, the drug has been administered at the beginning of treatment under all global clinical guidelines; it has never disappeared from medical appointments throughout the life of a patient with type 2 diabetes and has been cancelled only in case of any contraindications. So it was and so is now. But today in Ukraine, it is often heard that the place of metformin in patients with type 2 diabetes has changed, and now we must give the palm to sulfonylureas. Is it really so? Has the position of metformin really changed in modern antidiabetic
therapy in the world and in Ukraine? The review is dedicated to these issues.
