Abstract
Introduction. Today, birth control is an important aspect of life. Pregnancy can carry the risk of deterioration of a woman's health due to the heavy load on her body. An ideal contraceptive should be safe, effective, reversible, easy to use, widely available, and affordable [1]. Since the 60s of the 20th century, there has been a constant development of hormonal contraception. However, to date, there is not enough information about the influence of the type of contraception on the level of sexual satisfaction and comfort of use.
The purpose of the study is to compare the satisfaction of women who use oral contraception with the satisfaction of women who use the levonorgestrel-secreting intrauterine system. The following factors were taken into account during the comparison: comfort of use, menstrual cycle, libido level, well-being and impact on the relationship with the partner.
Materials and methods. 129 randomly selected women took part in the study and had to fill out the research questionnaire. The results. It has been proven that patients prefer to use the levonorgestrel-secreting intrauterine system due to its more reliable contraceptive effect and ease of use. This type of contraception has a beneficial effect on libido and relationships with a partner. Women using oral contraceptives did not report such a positive effect of their contraceptive method. An increase in libido was observed in 24 women in the group of patients who used the levonorgestrel-secreting intrauterine system and in 8 women in the group of oral contraceptive users, which corresponds to 33.8% and 13.8%. Patients used oral contraceptives more often in order to regulate the menstrual cycle and reduce heavy menstrual bleeding. Conclusions. The study identifies groups of women for whom a certain method of contraception is suitable. The greatest benefit from the use of levonorgestrel-secreting intrauterine system was received by patients who appreciate the convenience of use, as well as those who have sexual desire disorders or in whom oral contraception causes unwanted symptoms. Women with hormonal disturbances, irregular menstrual cycles, and heavy menstrual bleeding will benefit the most from using oral contraception.
