Abstract

The article presents the results of study of the prevalence of osteoporosis (OPS) in male chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients as well as the relationship between OPS and the markers of bone metabolism, body composition and systemic inflammation in relation to COPD severity. Decreased total bone mineral density (BMD) was detected in 67% of cases in general COPD group, while OPS was observed in 22% of cases with the prevalence of decreased BMD in lumbar spine. We found a significant increase in the proportion of patients with OPS during COPD development: none of COPD1 patients had OPS, while in COPD2,3 it was identified in 13% and 64% of patients respectively. Also it was shown that the low body mass index (BMI), lean mass index (LMI), bone mineral component index (BMCI) and the forced expiratory volume in 1 second levels were the significant contributors to BMD decrease in advanced COPD.
Thereby screen for OPS in COPD2,3 male patients over 50 years, especially in those having a low BMI, LMI and BMCI is required.
