Abstract

Pulmonary embolism is an important medical and social problem. In order to improve clinical outcomes the treatment should be initiated as soon as possible, and include thrombolysis, thrombendarterectomy (if indicated), long-term treatment with anticoagulants and phosphodiesterase inhibitors. Chronic post-embolic pulmonary hypertension should be considered as potentially curable form of pulmonary hypertension.
